Employment trends and prospects

The Western Australian employment trends and prospects 2011 report examines and compares changes in historical and forecast employment levels on an industry, occupation, and qualification basis.

The analysis is based on current Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data and projections from Monash University’s Centre of Policy Studies as at June 2011, and is presented at the most meaningful level of disaggregation possible.

The report helps inform an understanding of the State’s likely future employment profile and is a key input for the State Government’s workforce development planning.

Summary highlights

One of the key findings in the report is that employment growth in the State for the four years to 2010–11 was led by the mining industry, followed by the construction industry – due largely to the labour required for the construction phases of major resource projects. In the same period, a few industries saw employment levels fall – most notably the manufacturing industry.

The projections show that for the four years to 2014–15, the largest growth in employment levels is expected to occur in the industries of health care and social assistance and education and training. Two industries are projected to record falls in employment over the forecast period – agriculture, forestry and fishing and the arts and recreation services industry.

Information is presented on recent full time and part time job growth and also displayed by gender.
