TAFE lecturer Ron Simeon gets Lifetime Achievement Award

Wall and floor tiling lecturer Ron Simeon, from North Metropolitan TAFE, was recognised recently for his contribution to the VET sector through his involvement with the WorldSkills Australia program promoting and supporting vocational education and training.

WorldSkills competitions showcase skills excellence, testing competitors’ skills in practical projects based on industry skills. For over two decades, Ron has been giving his time as a volunteer with WorldSkills helping to design competition projects, judge wall and floor tiling competitions and train competitors at state, national and international level.

Ron was presented with two awards at a state event, held at Crown last month, which recognised the achievements of nearly 200 medallists from Western Australia. Trevor Schwenke, CEO of WorldSkills Australia, paid tribute to Ron’s contribution as a judge, coach and mentor in helping to inspire hundreds of competitors to strive for excellence. He presented Ron with a Lifetime Achievement Award from WorldSkills Australia, recognising his work at national level. Ron also received a Certificate of Merit from WorldSkills International, which acknowledged his contribution as the only international expert from Western Australia, training members of the Australian team — the Skillaroos.

Ron will be a familiar face to visitors to the SkillsWest Expo, where he runs the wall and floor tiling competitions which select members of Team WA. He will be back there again judging the nation’s best in August 2020 when Perth hosts the WorldSkills National Championship at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Congratulations Ron, and thank you for being such a great VET Ambassador.
