WA State priority occupation list 2018 endorsed and available

The State priority occupation list (SPOL) 2018 has been endorsed and is now available. The SPOL is a list of occupations rated according to their priority status for Western Australia. It is produced annually by the Department of Training and Workforce Development, using a range of key economic and labour market data and projections as well as evidence from each of the WA industry training councils and other stakeholders.

The main use for the SPOL is to help guide the annual purchasing of publicly-funded vocational education and training (VET) in WA, and in particular which qualifications receive additional subsidies via the Priority industry qualification list (PIQL) to encourage the take up of training in these areas. The SPOL also helps inform:

  • the State Training Plan produced by the WA State Training Board;
  • the Western Australian skilled migration occupation list (WASMOL); and
  • the Graduate occupation list (GOL),

as well as workforce development planning and other key work across the Department. SPOL data also informs occupational profiles and helps guide the broader framework of workforce development planning under the WA Plan for Jobs.

Of the 754 occupations initially assessed for the SPOL 2018, 253 are listed as State priority occupations, up from 247 in 2017. Compositionally, the health, education and professional services sectors continue to have the strongest presence on the SPOL 2018.
