WorldSkills WA 2019 regional competitions are on!

Western Australia’s WorldSkills regional competitions were launched last week in the South West, with a number of exciting competitions hosted by South Regional TAFE in Bunbury.

Guest of honour on the action-packed day was the VETiS* Shield – awarded for outstanding performance in VETiS competitions at the WorldSkills Australia national championships. In 2018, the VETiS shield was won by WA – the first and only state to take the win from New South Wales in its 17-year history.

The construction wing at the TAFE campus was buzzing with competitors keen to show off their skills, with year 11 students competing in three VETiS construction categories. The bricklayers carefully laid courses to construct their project, while in an Australian first the crowd was treated to a demonstration VETiS painting competition designed by the TAFE lecturers.

2018 national gold medallist and WA VET Ambassador, Nik Foster (main photo), helped motivate the apprentices in his trade of bricklaying at the competition by pace-setting the speed test and also helping to judge the results. Another WA VET Ambassador, Nick Johnston, was on hand to help judge the cabinet making category where competitors were hoping to follow in the footsteps of South West champion Kevin Dirks, who won a silver medal at the national championships in 2018. Nick also helped with the VETiS construction by prebuilding the project – a saw horse – to inspire competitors.

Over in hospitality, things were heating up in the kitchen as year 11 cooks prepared a three-course meal while a range of mocktails were prepared for invited guests by students competing in the food and beverage category. WA has a proud history in this field, having performed exceptionally well at the 2018 national competitions and bringing home the gold, silver and bronze medals.

Rounding out the day, students in the hairdressing skills category were competing in style as they completed a number of challenges including creative long hair design. This is the second time the South West has run VETiS hairdressing, with rising star Caitlin Carmody winning gold for WA at the 2018 national championships.

The South West will be running another series of competitions in September at South Regional TAFE, but in the meantime applications are open for VETiS and open construction and automotive categories to be held at the Perth Skills West Expo 16–18 August.
